What kinds of stories are on here?

This site hosts fanfiction for Anne Walsh's stories.

The Dangerverse (sometimes abbreviated DV) is a massive, multi-story "Alternate Universe" of the Harry Potter books. All fanfiction categorized under the Dangerverse is based on its situations, uses its characters (Gertrude "Danger" Granger, Aletha Freeman, Meghan Black, Draco Black, and others), or both. The original Dangerverse main stories are hosted here as well: Living with Danger, Living Without Danger, Dealing with Danger, and Facing Danger.

Natural Life (NL) is a serial story, told at the moment through the medium of a chat room, but Anne hopes to one day convert it into comic book format. It chronicles a world not too far removed from our own, and the plight of the therianthropes, ordinary human beings who seemingly without warning turn into animals. Theris are considered very dangerous and imprisoned in a walled compound in the Colorado mountains, ironically called “Sanctuary”.

The story of Natural Life as told by Anne has focused mainly on one eclectic group of theris in Sanctuary. They call themselves the Pack, and are devoted to retaining their humanity, where most theris who enter Sanctuary consider themselves beasts and act accordingly. Main characters include Helen, the teenage girl whose first transformation into a black jaguar is followed in the opening issues of Natural Life; James Jago, a sympathetic officer at Therianthrope Control; and Bastet, a young Asian woman and black panther theri who leads the Pack.

A list of other important characters and (eventually) all issues up to the present date will be posted on Anne Walsh’s archive, under the Natural Life heading.

The novel Dangerous Truths (DT) is set on the world of Trycanta, far from Earth, colonized by human refugees fleeing from war. More than a thousand years later, the humans of Trycanta recall that they came from another place, but little of why and nothing of how. Some humans claim to know of sentient races native to Trycanta—feline creatures called lyrror, dragonlike mazor—but others dismiss these claims as legends.

There are also tales of an ability called vica, similar to the human idea of magic. According to the stories, a vicobo, or user of vica, must learn his/her own affinity (earth, air, fire, water) and method (partly racially determined, but with room for personal choice). As well, each of the three Trycantan races has a few unique abilities; the common saying is that lyrror can Shift, mazor can See, and humans can Speak.

Trycanta has many countries and cultures, but Dangerous Truths focuses on the Celitar Confederation, a group of technologically modern and democratic city-states, loosely banded together by trade agreements and treaties. The humans of the great cities in the Confederation go about their daily lives never thinking of lyrror or mazor—why should they trouble about ancient legends? But the ancient legends may soon be troubling them...

The country of Dulia, far away from Celitar, is ruled by a monarch, and its technology is less advanced than Celitar’s, but it too is disturbed by lyrror and mazor. In particular, the Dulians fear a group who call themselves the Guvabor, or “Three Peoples” in the ancient language of Trycanta. Humans, lyrror, and mazor together, the Guvabor claim that their way is the ancient and true one, and fight for the rights of all people. A few tales of the Guvabor are posted on Anne Walsh’s archive, under the Dangerous Truths heading.

N.B.  Dangerous Truths is the first novel of the Caparo Quartet. The other three titles will be Joyful Wings, Beloved Warrior, and Falcon’s Fight.

Caparo literally means "one who cannot be denied". Its metaphoric meaning is a found family, a group of people who have come together for protection from the world. As such, it makes a great name for the town that Anne Walsh's fans plan one day to found together.

Caparo stories explore life in this little town, with all the romantic mix-ups and childish troubles of any other place. No one takes the proposed ships too seriously--it's all in good fun. Watch for lots of familiar names and faces as the authors of Trylasotar explore what they'd like their lives to be in ten or twenty years!

Why should I register for an account?

Technically, you don't have to register to use this site. However, doing so gets you certain benefits. You can mark certain stories or authors as "favorites" and receive e-mail alerts when they update. Reviews you submit will be "signed", giving them rather more credibility in some people's eyes. Also, some authors only accept signed reviews, and you'll need an account to review their stories. Finally, you'll need an account if you want to become an author here (see below).

We promise not to give your personal information to anyone whatsoever.

You will need a valid email address to create an account. Nothing else is necessary. To register, go here.

How do I get on here as an author?

Short answer: To get author access, you need to earn it.

Long answer:

This site is not, and was never meant to be, a fanfiction archive completely open to the public. There will always be plenty of sites offering that; fanfiction.net is probably the best-known. Trylasotar, as the closest thing there will probably be to an "official" fanfiction archive for Anne's stories, is meant more to offer reasonably skilled writers in her fandoms an opportunity to archive their writing under one "roof".

If you have written more than 10,000 words in any of Anne's universes and think that your style is reasonably competent (no "ZOMG IM c00l!!!!!!!11!!!!" please), fill out this form and Anne will get in touch with you.

How can I contact one of the authors?

Every author's "About the Author" page has an email link on it. Use that link.

Alternatively, you can reach the author whose page is at http://someone.trycanta.com/ by sending email to someone@trycanta.com.

What are PDF files? What about all those options?

PDF stands for Portable Document Format; it's a file format that can represent a document exactly the way it'll be printed. The PDF files on this site are generated using a program called TeX, which typesets output much better-looking than anything a web browser can produce. You may find them useful for printing stories or chapters of stories on this site, or just for downloading to keep on your computer.

In addition, we have at least one confirmed instance of our esteemed authoress avoiding retribution for reading TFA at work because the file she had open was a PDF.

Because the PDFs are typeset exactly how they'll be printed, there are different versions for different paper sizes and formats. Paper is meant for normal, letter-size, 8.5x11" paper; it has equal margins on all pages, so it's suitable for single-sided printing. Binder is also for letter-size paper, but its margins are skewed to give proper spacing when printed double-sided, hole punched, and put in a binder or similar organizational instrument. Book is typeset on a 6"x9" page, with relatively thin margins—much like you'd find in a printed book.

If, in place of any of these choices, you see a red link with the word "failed" in it (e.g. book failed), there isn't a PDF there! Rather, the link will take you to TeX's log file, which can tell an experienced person what went wrong. If you see such a link, you should probably ignore it.

What's that “Computer Modern” font that's available in Options?

Computer Modern is a freely available typeface designed by Donald Knuth and used primarily by a program called TeX. In the webmaster's opinion, it's very readable and looks great, especially in print.

If you want to get them, download the fonts for Mac or PC and install them like any other fonts. (On Windows, drag into Control Panel > Fonts; on Mac, double-click and click Install Font.)

How do I need to write my stories so they can be submitted?

The site understands the output from Word and OpenOffice, as well as TeX and HTML formatting. The first three are converted into the fourth when you upload. See Markup Help if you're having trouble with the HTML markup.

I've found a bug! What should I do?

If the site isn't working as it should, please email Josh (he's one of the authors on here) and give him as complete a description of the problem as you can. Any error messages should be reproduced exactly. He'll do his best to fix it ASAP.

My imagination, muse and stories belong to me.
Dangerverse and Natural Life belong to Anne Walsh.
Harry Potter belongs to J.K.Rowling.
